Whole House Controls Using Vera |
Before Mi Casa Verde came on the scene in 2008 with their Vera System, you basically had two paths to install a true smart home system, either home automation software running on your home desktop PC, or a proprietary system such as Control4 or Life/Ware. The Vera system with Z-Wave devices represents a complete home automation solution. The Vera hub, which acts as the central “server” to the system, controls a Z-Wave mesh network of devices installed in your home. These can range from lighting devices like the Leviton Vizia RF+ family, a Wayne-Dalton Z-Wave thermostat, wireless IP cameras, a Z-Wave motion sensor, and a Schlage Z-Wave door lock. Add all these devices together and you have a very complete smart home system.
Shown at right, the Vera hub functions like a wireless router, a wired (4-port) router or switch and a Web server for all of the automation functions. Setting up Vera as the Primary Controller of your Z-Wave devices is straightforward. Vera arrives fully configured to send emails or SMS alerts for any action or alert that happens in the home; which is as simple as typing in your address and checking off a box to receive a message for that event. You can program everything from simple light commands to very complicated lighting scenes into Vera, or similarly setup a schedule to control your thermostat settings. Vera also supports legacy X10 devices and Insteon wireless lighting devices.
The ZWAVE Plug-in Lamp Module at left from Leviton provides an RF repeater which allows your lamp to be controlled by Vera's built-in software through the Z-Wave USB dongle that comes with Vera. This device allows on/off and dimming control of your incandescent lamp and participates in a ZWAVE mesh network by retransmitting the wireless signal for reception by other nearby ZWAVE devices. Installation couldn't be easier, just plug the module into a wall outlet and plug the lamp into the bottom of the module.
The Vizia RF Z-Wave 600W In-Wall Dimmer, shown at right, controls any incandescent light remotely by replacing your standard wall switch. Since this scene-capable dimmer is Z-Wave compatible, you'll be able to control it directly at the switch as well as remotely via the Vera hub. Z-Wave also means no new wires need to be run, and powerline transmission issues are not a factor.
Note: For 3-way dimming applications the Leviton ViziaRF ZWAVE Dimmer and Vizia Coordinating Dimmer Remote are recommended.
