Control Your Thermostat from Your PC |
The TXB16 X10 HVAC System from Residential Control Systems (RCS) is our spotlight solution for controlling your thermostat from your PC. This solution includes the three components pictured below.
The gray box on the left is the TXB16 controller. This box is typically installed near your furnace or heat pump in a location accessible to your existing thermostat wiring. The 4 or 5-conductor thermostat wire is then cut, and each side of the wire is terminated inside the TXB16 controller. One side connects the TXB16 to your HVAC system, the other side connects the controller to the Wall Display Unit (WDU), which is the middle item pictured at right. The WDU replaces your old thermostat and mounts on the wall in the same location. The WDU provides an easy to use local control mechanism for fan, mode, and heat/cool setpoints. The third item on the right of the picture is the X10 controller, which plugs into an electrical outlet. This X10 controller connects the TXB16 controller to your PC via your house electrical wiring, thus enabling software running on your PC to communicate with the TXB16 system using the X10 signaling protocol.
The fourth hardware item required to complete this solution is the PowerLinc USB Controller pictured separately at right. This unit also plugs into an electrical outlet, and connects to your PC via a USB port. This device enables software running on your PC to send commands and receive status from all the X10 devices installed in your home. The TXB16 X10 HVAC System is supported by several different home automation software packages currently available. The JCL Automation Demo House uses the Homeseer software, which is an example of the type of functionality available today.
