Simplify Home Entertainment Remote Controls

Does your home entertainment system include a TV, a cable or satellite receiver, an audio receiver, a DVD or VCR player, and possibly a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)? If so, then you likely have five separate infrared (IR) remote control units, one for each device. While you may be able to control some of these devices with one remote which "learns" the IR commands for multiple devices, wouldn't your life be simpler if the push of one button turned on all devices required to watch that new release DVD or a saved movie on your DVR? For less than $165 equipment cost this solution allows you to accomplish that single button control for your most frequently used entertainment center operations.

Installed Smarthome IRLinc The Smarthome Model 1623 IR Linc, front view pictured at right, learns and stores IR commands from your various remote control units and associates an individual command or a sequence of commands to a single X10 address. The IR Linc can send IR commands to your devices either through line of site using the two "blast" emitters on the front center of the device, or via single or double headed stick-on emitters that attach to a device directly over the IR sensor. The IR Linc can accomodate three single or double headed or blast emitters that plug into the IR Out jacks in the back of the IR Linc. Note any combination of line of site or plug-in emitters can be used to accomplish communication with all your entertainment devices.

Once all connections from the IR Linc to your home entertainment devices have been completed, the IR Linc is ready to program. Programming is the process of learning the IR commands from each individual remote control unit, and associating those commands with an X10 address. For example, the following sequence of IR commands would be learned by the IR Linc to play a DVD disc:

  • TV power on
  • DVD player power on
  • Audio receiver power on
  • TV set to DVD video input
  • Audio receiver set to DVD audio input
  • DVD player "play" command.

Each IR command in the above sequence would be associated with the same X10 address. Thus the action of pressing six different buttons on three different remotes can now be accomplished with the "touch of a single button"!

The IR Linc comes with a PowerLinc II PowerLine Adapter which powers the base unit shown above and provides the connection to your home electrical wiring to enable the receipt of X10 commands. The PowerLinc II plugs into a 110 V outlet and connects to the base unit via the supplied cat5 phone cable.

Wireless Remote Control The X10 Pro Wireless Remote Control System pictured at right is the recommended unit to send the programmed X10 commands to the IR Linc. The device on the right side of the picture is a RF Transceiver Module which plugs into a standard wall outlet and detects and transmits X10 commands sent from a wireless device for any of the 16 units associated with a selected house code. The device on the left of the picture is a RF transmitter Remote that sends unit on/off or bright/dim commands for one of 16 X10 addresses associated with the same house code. For example, if we associated X10 command "A1-ON" with the IR command sequence above for playing a DVD disc, we set the house code on the remote to "A" one time then press the top left button for A1-ON each time we wish to play a DVD disc! Note the RF signal from the remote will be detected up to 100 feet from the transceiver, even through walls.
