Eliminate Hot Water Delays in the Shower |
After turning on the hot water for your shower do you have to wait several minutes while the hot water travels from the tank to your shower head? The typical solution to obtain "instant" hot water for the shower is to install a recalculating pump which recirculates hot water in your water line continuously. However without a control mechanism, the pump will run 24 hours a day to provide instant hot water for perhaps only a handful of showers a day or less. Mechanical timers offer a solution such as running the pump for 15 minutes of every hour. However the odds are 3 to 1 the pump will not be running when you step in the shower. For less than $70 equipment cost this solution allows you to control your recalculating pump on demand.
For those who don't have a recalculating pump, consider the Chilipepper hot water demand pump shown at left. The Chilipepper is a little, yet powerful, hot water pump which mounts under your sink. Once installed hot water is pumped rapidly from your hot water heater to either your sink or shower with just the push of a button. It will work with any and all water heaters from traditional to tankless to even solar heaters. The small but powerful device operates at 1/3 of a horsepower which makes it the most powerful pump for any residential hot water system.
The Leviton Model 2250 Fixture Relay Module, pictured at right, is the X10 device needed to switch the pump on or off. This fixture relay can control up to a 15 amp resistive or inductive appliance load, and has no problem controlling the pump which is typically well under a one amp load. Note this relay is wired in line with the 120V pump power cord, and switches the hot lead on or off to control the pump. The relay can be mounted with supplied self-adhesive tape to the inside of an electrical box.
The X10 LCD Mini-Timer pictured at right is the recommended unit to control the above Leviton Fixture Relay. To activate the recalculating pump simply press the ON button assigned to the address of the relay before you enter the shower, and press the off button when your done with your shower. .
If you already have a X10 lighting control solution and timer installed, this hot shower control can be added for less than $30 incremental equipment cost.
The Chilipepper is also capable of being remotely operated using INSTEON home control. Simply wire the control cable on the Chilipepper to an I/O Linc which plugs into the nearest outlet. The I/O Linc can then be triggered locally by changing out a nearby wall switch for a 6-Button KeypadLinc. Or, to remotely activate the Chilipepper, use a RemoteLinc to trigger the I/O Linc to turn your Chilipepper on.
