Get Started with Lighting Controls |
For those who are just getting their feet wet with home automation. A great wireless solution for controlling a space heater, fan, air filter or any plug-in appliance or light, is pictured below.
Shown are one wireless appliance module (ApplianceLinc), an Access Point, and a RemoteLinc handheld controller. This represents a simple Starter Kit for one device you want to turn On/Off remotely. This kit gives you everything you need to control your device with the handheld remote. The ApplianceLinc plugs into an electrical outlet. The device it controls plugs into the bottom of the device. Note the top center 2-prong receptacle provides an "always on" plug for other use. The Access Point, along with the RemoteLinc comprises the INSTEON wireless network, and function as wireless RF signal receiver/transmitters.
If expanding the system to control more than a single appliance or light, we recommend purchasing one more Access Point to ensure reliable communication.
Consider the energy saving KeypadLinc Countdown Timer shown at right. This wall-mounted unit is perfect for areas where lights normally only need to be left on for a short period of time, like the laundry room, garage, kitchen, mud room, bathrooms, closets, and anywhere else you can imagine.
INSTEON has the following advantages over legacy X10 networks:
- Increases the number of controllable devices in the home from 256 max to 417
- Provides more reliable operation when sufficient Access Points are installed by avoiding the signal propagation issues common with X10 technology
- RF signaling provides "instant" on/off operation eliminating the delay time associated with transmitting X10 signals through your house wiring (typical RF signal propagation time is 51 msec)
- Eliminates the need to manually set X10 addresses via codewheels on each lighting switch or lamp/appliance module
- Supports "lighting scenes" much more economically than typical X10 solutions
- Comes with a 2 year warranty instead of the 1 year warranty on most X10 devices
- Expand your INSTEON network reach in larger homes easily by installing additional Access Points
- Shorter solution installation time
