Home Theater with Multi-Room Music, Lighting and Climate Control


Below is a schematic picture of an expanded Control4 home control system with the ability to control a Sony Blu-ray MegaChanger in the home theater room plus stream digital audio to 4 other rooms in the house from it's USB-attached storage. This system also controls all lighting in the theater room with a wireless outlet switch and 4 wireless dimmers plus the temperature with a wireless thermostat. Control4 products connect via a home network using standard Ethernet or 802.11b/g/n wireless Ethernet connections. Control signals from the RF system remote use Zigbee (802.15.4) mesh networking for reliable command transmission between devices. This handheld remote allows you to easily navigate the on screen interface to watch a movie, select a favorite TV channel, or launch your favorite music playlist, and will replace the 4 or more remotes you may now be using to control your entertainment complex.

The above system includes a Home Controller HC-800 with System Remote Control SR-150, two Ethernet Speaker Points, two Wifi Speaker Points, and a complete array of user interface devices from the System Remote to the 7" Portable Touch Screen with Camera in the Kitchen. The home theater room also includes 4 Wireless Dimmers, a Wireless Outlet Switch, and a Wireless Thermostat and a Sony BDP-CX7000ES Blu-ray MegaChanger. The Sony BDP-CX7000ES is completely integrated into the Control4 system enabling automatic recognition of new Blu-ray discs placed in the Changer. The Speaker Points receive the digital audio transmission from the HC-800 Controller and convert to stereo outputs for speakers located in the 4 other rooms. The second Remote, LCD Keypad, 5" In-Wall White Touch Screen, and 7" Portable Touch Screen with Camera provide a user interface to the system in those rooms providing complete control over the audio selection of each room. Note a different music selection can be played in each of 4 rooms while a Blu-ray disc is being simultaneously viewed in the theater room.

The rear of the HC-800 Controller shows the connectivity supported by this system, which includes:

  • 1 Analog Audio In (RCA), 2 Analog Audio Out (RCA), and 1 Digital Audio Out - Coax (RCA)
  • 1 Component video and 1 HDMI (audio/video) output for the HDTV on-screen display
  • IR: 1 front panel receiver,1 front panel blaster output, 6 output 3.5mm jacks
  • Serial: 2 RS-232 Serial DB9 connectors
  • Contact: 4 contact sensor input (2-wire)
  • Relay: 4 relay outputs (2-wire)
  • USB: 1 rear USB 2.0
  • eSATA: 1 rear External SATA connection
  • Ethernet: 10/100/1000BaseT (802.3ab), RJ45 jack
  • WiFi (802.11g/n) with internal Wireless-N and 2 External, reverse SMA connectors
  • ZigBee Pro (802.15.4) with external ZigBee reverse SMA connector

The HC-800 will stream digital audio simultaneously to each of the 5 rooms controlled by this system. Media Composer software for Windows is provided to enable downloading and cataloging a complete music library with cover art, and then creating custom playlists for every occasion and mood. The serial inputs allow the HC-800 to monitor the zones and arm/disarm any supported security system with a serial output. The contact input and relay outputs can be used to control a motorized screen, window covering, or any other device accepting a contact closure input.
